A collection of 33 coins, consisting of nickels dimes and quarters has a value of .30, if there are 3 times as many nickles as quarters, and one half as many dimes as nickles, how many of each coin is there?

Chosen Answer:

Given:
N + D + Q = 33.
Q = N/3;
D = N/2.
Substitute:
N + N/2 + N/3 = 33;
(6/6)N + (3/6)N + (2/6)N = 33;
(11/6)N = 33;
N = 18.
Therefore
D = 18/2 = 9 and
Q = 18/3 = 6.
To check,
18 + 9 + 6 = 33,
and also:
.05*18 + .10*9 + .25*6 = .90 + .90 + .50 = .30.

50 States Coin Collection?!?

Posted by on Thursday, 8 December, 2011

I have ALL THE STATES Of the United States.

Is it going to be work anything later on in the years?
There all Quarters so i don’t know if its going to be worth anything?
Should i keep it until like im 60 years old?

Chosen Answer:

I would definitely keep the quarters. It’s not everyday you see a piece of money dated 1900. But if you keep them for a hundred years, I’d say they’d gain value.

A coin collector had a collection of silver coins worth $205. . .?

Posted by on Thursday, 24 November, 2011

A coin collector had a collection of silver coins worth 5. There were five times as many quarters as half-dollars (50-cent pieces) and 200 fewer dimes than quarters. How many of each coin did the collector have?

Chosen Answer:

Your only variable is the number of quarters or x. Then you have (x/5) half dollars and (x – 200) dimes. I hope you can take it from there.

Coin Collection or appraisal?

Posted by on Monday, 7 November, 2011

I have a dime that is normal color on the back side and copper colored on the front.

Where can I find a reputable appraiser in the Southern California area or internet?

Chosen Answer:

I think dimes are copper. They’re just nickle plated, like quarters and, well, nickels. Could be wrong though, but it sounds like the plating just wore off.

Is cleaning my coin collection with Brasso a good way to clean them?

Posted by on Sunday, 6 November, 2011

I collect the Lincoln pennies, Jefferson nickels, Washington quarters, and the Roosevelt dimes. There are some that are so dirty and so stained, I was wondering if using Brasso cleaner is a good method of cleaning the coins. It would make my collection look very nice I am sure, but will it harm them in anyway? Does it really take away from any value that they may have? If so, are there good alternatives? I have tried using things like ketchup, lime juice, and even Tabasco sauce with no real luck. Thanks for the help :)

Chosen Answer:

If you’ve already used ketchup and other things on these coins, you’ve ruined any collector value they might have had. Your collection won’t look nice to anyone who knows coins, it’ll look like hell. They might look shiny, but they won’t look new. The dirt may be gone but the scratches and abrasions the coins already had, before you added even more by cleaning them, will be even more noticeable. These coins will never look right again.

If you just tried this stuff out on other coins but not you collection, good. Don’t clean them.

Has anyone ever filled a 5 gallon water bottle with coins?

Posted by on Saturday, 5 November, 2011

I am in the process of filling a 5 gallon water bottle with quarters, dimes and nickles (no pennies) and it has taken me about 10 years to get it half full. I am curious if anyone has ever filled one with coins and if so, how much money you got when you were finished. I estimate it will be around ,000 dollars.

Chosen Answer:

My uncle has 2 of them. (5gal glass jars)
He thinks it’s around 00

How do vending machines tell the difference in between quarters from tokens or other “fake” coins?

Posted by on Wednesday, 26 October, 2011

what type of mechanism is used to decypher between coins?

Chosen Answer:

years ago weight was the sole determinating factor. but now some machines use the same technology that metal detectors use. The can determine size weight and material used thereby verifying the type of coin and its value. Pretty cool to see them make the machine to be honest

coin collection-how much value?

Posted by on Saturday, 15 October, 2011

okay, i know i’m young, and it’s unusual for young people to do this, but i have a coin collection. lol. and i might want to sell it, cuz i started collecting when i was about 8, and i thought it was cool to have all this strange money, but now i realize, that it’s just sitting there, when there are people out there in the world that i’m sure would enjoy it. it’s not a whole lot, but just tell me how much you think it’s worth right now, like on ebay or something. lol.

it consists of all the state quarters except alaska and hawaii(as of right now), a book that goes with those, one honduran dollar bill from 2000, one US 2 dollar bill from 1976, two one-dollar coin things(bronze with the picture of a woman and a baby made in 2000) a 1952 wheat penny, two 1976 quaters(the ones with the drummer in the army of 1776, the 200th aneversary of hte country i suppose)one 1923 murcury head dime(poor condition :( ) one 1972 canadian penny, one 1973 US nickel,one “ocean veiw ! O! the joy!” nickel from 2005, one lewis and clark nickel from 2004, one louisiana purchase nickel from 2004, one mexican dollar coin.

Random collection i know, but that’s because i’ve been just collecting anything un-usual in money form for a while. so how much is it all worth?

Chosen Answer:

You have nothing with value except for the face value of the coins. None are old enough to have a collector’s value yet. The statehood quarters are readily available and so many were struck it will take 50 years or more for just the circulation strikes to have a decent value. the 1923 dime would have more value than the silver in it if it was not in poor condition but that is only a few dollars. I am sorry but you will need to hold onto it for a good many years.
