Mint Stats: Buyers back out of Freedom set

Posted by on Thursday, 17 May, 2012

The case of the Defenders of Freedom Set not selling out its 50,000 maximum took a curious turn this week. The number of sets sold was reduced by 2,709 to 43,727. Not only has the 50,000 ceiling lost its old magic over collectors, some are apparently turning hostile to it and returning what they purchased.

While collectors are not hostile to proof gold American Eagles, their enthusiasm is tepid. Sales numbers hardly budged this week. The one-ounce proof saw an additional 165 sold to increase the running tally to 3,107, while the half ounce was up by 46, the quarter ounce by 92, the tenth ounce by 288 and the four-coin set by 172. If you think that’s slow, the 2011 four-coin set, which is still available, saw its running tally rise by just one set to 18,147. I hope the Mint hasn’t many left. At one set a week, it will take almost forever to sell out the supply.

The Coin Collector's Survival Manual

Legal and financial advice for buying and selling coins, and a new chapter on the most secure way to detect coins that have been “doctored.”

Buyers of the 2012 bullion gold Eagles have zeroed in on the ounce in May, taking 31,500 so far this month while ignoring the fractional sizes. Does cheaper gold bullion mean buyers stock up on the larger Eagle coins?

Another Story that Sells

Posted by on Thursday, 17 May, 2012

I continue to be amazed with the stories some coins garner. Last week, I received a note announcing that one of the only two known 1907 rolled edge Indian Head $10 Eagle Proof gold coins will be exhibited at the up coming Long Beach Coin, Stamp Collectibles Expo.

The coin is own by Monaco Rare Coins of Newport Beach, California and has been graded by Numismatic Guarantee Corporation as Satin PR67.

“This important and monumental rarity was not discovered to be a proof finish until several years ago.  It was previously misattributed as mint state. The coin now is insured for $3 million,” said Adam Crum, Vice President of Monaco Rare Coins.

According to Crum, there are some researchers who believe that this coins may have been owned by President Theodore Roosevelt. As part of Roosevelt’s “pet crime,” he worked with prominent sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign U.S. coinage. Prior to his death, Saint-Gaudens completed the design of the Indian Head $10 gold Eagle and the iconic $20 gold Double Eagle, both introduced in 1907.

“One prominent numismatist told me, ‘After all the research we did, your coin has to be Teddy’s,’” Crum said. “Obviously, more research is required, but that is what being a numismatist is all about, isn’t it?  I look forward to more discovery.”

Even if the coin was not owned by Teddy Roosevelt it is still a great story!

If you are in the Long Beach area, the show runs Thursday and Friday, May 31 and June 1, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.., and Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Drop by and see this historic coin!

PNG gives scholarship

Posted by on Wednesday, 16 May, 2012

A scholarship to the American Numismatic Association Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs, Colo., has been given by the Professional Numismatists Guild to Paul Zapantis, a 21-year-old college student from Worcester, Mass.

“The scholarship will cover airfare, tuition and six nights of dormitory accommodations on the campus of Colorado College,” said PNG Executive Director Robert Brueggeman.

Zapantis said his interest in coins came from both his father, Dino, and grandfather, Paul.

“My Dad acted as ‘tooth fairy’ when I was young and I wound find a silver dollar under my pillow when I’d put a tooth there. I also got a silver Eagle in my stocking every Christmas,” said Zapantis.

“My grandfather owned a small variety store, and one day when I was in the first grade he brought out a big bag of silver coins and split them up with me and my brother, Nick.”

His current interest lies in the coins of the 20th century.

“I try to stick to 20th century coins; things my grandfather would have seen in circulation in his lifetime,” he said.

Zapantis says he will take a class on coin grading.

He is a National Honor Society member, was president of both his senior class and the student council when he graduated from Clinton High School in 2009. He just completed his junior year at Worcester State University.

The PNG says this is the eighth consecutive year of its YN scholarships to Summer Seminar. It is paid for PNG’s Gerald Bauman Memorial Fund. Bauman, who died in 2001, served for many years as a prominent coin dealer with Manfra, Tordella Brookes in New York City.
